Parallel Parking RSS Intrepid

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) is organising the RSN50@ Vivo event from 8 November to 12 November. Fronting this year’s event is Formidable-class frigate RSS Intrepid (69), which came alongside Vivocity today. This will be the last few events to celebrate the Navy’s 50th Anniversary.

Parking a 3,200 tonnes warship at the tight waterfront is no easy task, with little space to manoeuvre forward and aft with the Sentosa bridge and Harbourfront ferry terminal flanking the pier.

At around 1245 pm, RSS Intrepid appear around Tanjong Rimau of Sentosa Island, escorted by two tugs. Note the clean cloth draped over the tug’s bow, ensuring the cleanliness of the warship’s hull. The move took a while, navigating around shallow waters near Labrador Park and Sentosa Island.

As the tugs slowly nudge RSS Intrepid to the pier, it was intense concentration from the Command as they monitor the movement and gave their command from the bridgewing, The steel hull shudders as the bow trusters activates to adjust her position, churning white foam near her pennant number. RSS Intrepid participated in a three month deployment to the Gulf of Aden under the codename Operation Blue Sapphire IV,between September to December 2012.

“Cast one!” The first line was throw to the pier as she begin to secure into position, the Singapore jack was also raised. Witnessing the frigate come alongside also reveals many details seldom seen in your usual public open days. Note the open hatches as well as the 1 tonne hoist, by the 25mm Typhoon gun.
